A report titled “Americans’ Trust in Scientists, Positive Views of Science Continue to Decline,” issued November 14, 2023, by the Pew Research Center documents the continuing decline in confidence Americans have of many societal groups.

In addition to an initial section that briefly describes the report’s key main findings, the report is divided into three main sections:

  • Trust in scientists and other groups
  • Views of the impact of science on society
  • Support for government investments in science

The report, which includes many colorful graphs, notes that “despite recent declines in ratings, scientists and medical scientists continue to be held in high regard compared with other prominent groups in society. Smaller shares of Americans express confidence in business leaders, religious leaders, journalists and elected officials to act in the public’s best interests” (emphasis added).
